German Olympic Hockey Team Factoids

Here are some Sport Crap Factoids about the tight-checking German Olympic Hockey Team:

Their best recent results include finishing 6th place at the 2003 World Championships where they lost a close quarter-final match in overtime to Canada

In the 1992 Olympics, they lost to Canada 4-3 in an overtime shoot-out in the quarter-finals.

They finished sixth in the 1984 Canada Cup

Canada beat Germany 5-1 at the 2006 Turin Olympics. The Canadian goalie in that game was Roberto Luongo.

There are 10 German-born hockey players among the league’s 30 teams, two of whom grew up in other countries and will represent those nations at the Olympics (Dany Heatley, Canada; Mikhail Grabovski, Belarus). Of the remaining eight, only six have been selected to don the Team Germany sweater:

* Thomas Greiss (goaltender, San Jose Sharks)
* Christian Ehroff (defenseman, Vancouver Canucks)
* Dennis Seidenberg (defenseman, Florida Panthers)
* Alexander Sulzer (defenseman, Nashville Predators)
* Marcel Goc (center, Nashville Predators)
• Marco Sturm (winger, Boston Bruins)

The 2010 World Hockey Championships are being held in Germany.

There are 25,934 registered players in Germany (0.03% of its population). In Canada 98.7% of the population play hockey. (kidding!)

Sports Crap Predicts: Canada 2 Germany 0
